In 2011, construction of the Mother-Child and Surgical Centre SZX designed by Nickl & Partner Architekten began on the grounds of the Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Hospital in Vienna. The Children’s Hospital, with all of its services and departmental specialties, settled into the new building at the beginning of June 2016. The move was carried out successfully in the course of a single weekend with no interruption of operations.
Sonja Wehsely (SPÖ), city councilwoman responsible for healthcare, formally opened the new building on 21 June 2016. The entire department now contains 258 beds in single and double rooms. Wehsely underscored that the new Mother-Child and Surgical Centre SZX was the physical embodiment of step-by-step implementation of the Hospital 2030 concept. The concept provides for regional concentration and priority setting in hospitals.
