In the planning and implementation of hospitals and health care buildings the apparently unrelated terms healing and architecture are becoming a reality that demonstrably influences the well-being of patients and staff as well as patient recovery. Healing Architecture is one of the research focal points at the Department of Hospital and Health Care Building Design at the Technical University in Berlin under the direction of Professor Christine Nickl-Weller. The subject requires a fundamental analysis of the principles of conception and design of built space and its impact on coping with illness. It was the main topic of the fourth “Healthcare der Zukunft” (Health Care of the Future ) symposium – Healing Architecture – and was scrutinised with regard to economics, environment, ethics and location by interdisciplinary experts from architecture, medicine, health management and politics.
This book documents the lectures from the fourth symposium and provides extracts from the expert conference in November 2011 on the subject of Healing Architecture as a Keynote in Foreign Health Economics supported by the federal health ministry and also organised by the Department of Hospital and Health Care Building Design at the Technical University in Berlin.
