Health Care of the Future 8 – Rethinking Hospitals

Facing enormous future challenges, the public health infrastructure will have to change fundamentally in order to continue to provide sustainable and fair care. Digitalisation is revolutionising the medical sector and the construction industry alike. The patient’s journey through the healthcare landscape is changing from consuming to interactive, from unsteady to continuous. This will ultimately result in outpatientisation and decentralisation of care facilities. At the same time, we will face massive social challenges such as demographic change, labour shortages and climate change.

What will be the consequences for the hospital of the future? Will the general hospital as we know it continue to exist? How can we make the existing hospital buildings fit for the future? Will the hospital of the future have to be mobile, modular and flexible? And how will users/patients experience these new, efficient buildings?

The 8th “Health Care of the Future” symposium, whose lectures are compiled in this volume, presents concepts and background information and discusses them with planners and healthcare experts. In doing so, we take a look at our European neighbours, explore different approaches and solutions and discover successful projects with the common goal of rethinking hospitals.
