The new research building is located in the Dahlem district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf.
The particular challenge for the design of the new SupraFAB building was to implement the required spatial program in a well-ordered structure that combines all measuring and large equipment rooms on one level and whose double development fits ideally into the topography and the existing network of paths on the FU campus.
The building is designed as a modular, three-flush block on three levels and is divided horizontally into three clearly defined functional units – a laboratory zone along the northwest façade, an office zone along the southeast façade and a centrally located functional zone, which is interrupted and illuminated by a spacious inner courtyard. In this spacious, attractive atrium, an open staircase connects all levels of the building.
The building height is deliberately limited to three levels plus technical superstructures so as not to exceed the eaves height of the chemistry institute and not to appear too dominant in relation to the neighboring residential buildings. Between the new building and the Konrad Zuse Institute, a new landscaped recreation and communication area for the staff and students of the FU Campus is being created, framed on three sides.
