The institute stands at the entrance to Chemnitz’s new technology park, its LED-illuminated façade giving it added prominence. This new and compact four-storey building brings order to a somewhat cluttered environment and creates a new entrance plaza. Inside, single- and double-span rooms are arranged windmill fashion around a central atrium that provides daylight to all parts of the building and a space for scientific interaction.

The various specialist research departments are housed on the four levels of the building, each of which has a specific focus. The multilayered metal-screen façade serves as an external symbol of the high-tech nanotechnology research that takes place inside the building.

Date of completion: 2010
