This new library is designed to be open, transparent and user friendly. It faces west, overlooking an inner courtyard and extending the horizontal lines of the existing cornices.

An atrium forms the heart of the library, providing bright illumination to the surrounding area and serving as a “third place”, separate from the home and the lecture room, in which students and teachers can interact with other people.

It was particularly important to create a clear and respectful separation and complementarity between the modern architecture of the library and the traditional style of the adjoining building, Ludwigstrasse 25, whose exterior remains largely unchanged.
