Arno Görgen | Thorsten Halling (Eds.)
In his contribution, “Das Krankenhaus im öffentlichen Raum” (The Hospital in the Public Sphere, pp. 39-62), Prof. Hans Nickl traces the history of hospital construction. In particular, he describes the forerunners of modern hospital architecture and the intensification of an architectural paradigm of functionalism in the mega structures of the 1970s. Finally, using examples from day-to-day planning work at the architectural offices of Nickl & Partner Architekten, he discusses contemporary hospital planning, while reflecting on its historic roots, and shares his thoughts about the future challenges of hospital planning.
