The new Helmholtz Institute in the high-tech city of Ulm is a unique national centre of excellence specialising in electrochemical energy storage. Located in the Obere Eselsberg science park, it allows the existing greenery to continue between the buildings and across the road, which passes the new research and laboratory building diagonally, provides spacious access to the main entrance, and creates a connection with the opposite section of the park.
The extended landscaping and the position of the new building connect the two parts of the campus, which are separated by the road. The institute’s distinctive façade makes reference to chemistry and physics. Its homogeneous perforated sheet metal with holes of various sizes, and variable sunblind positions, create visual tension and give the building a strong identity.
