As part of a process of centralisation, Munich’s inner-city hospitals were relocated to Grosshadern University Hospital, and an interdisciplinary hospital was built in the city centre. This, together with the central hospital, covers all the main areas of medicine.

The juxtaposition of two architectural styles, a comb-like structure on the ground floor and a more compact building above it, creates a sense of connection with the surrounding city. This comb arrangement creates a staggered effect when viewed from the street and gives glimpses inside the building. The historic entrance has been left in place, and the hospital has landscaped courtyards, full natural lighting and a bright, welcoming interior. The compact main structure is the same height as the old building and many of the surrounding blocks.
